Climate campaigners have reacted to ‘desperate’ claims by the Conservative Party that it would scrap the Climate Change Act.

Friends of the Earth Scotland oil and gas campaigns manager Rosie Hampton said:

“Scrapping the UK’s climate commitments would be morally reprehensible, scientifically illiterate and economically idiotic.

“Extreme weather caused by climate breakdown is here already, and it requires a concerted effort across our society, not desperately mimicking Trump by pretending it doesn’t exist.

“Taking decisive action to cut climate pollution will mean warmer homes, more affordable energy and better public transport which are changes that millions of people are crying out for.

“Politicians calling for unlimited fossil fuel drilling are doing the bidding of oil company lobbyists because nobody else considers it a credible approach. A ‘drill baby drill’ approach will kill people by worsening climate breakdown.

“Any oil drilled from the North Sea will be sold to the highest bidder and do nothing to reduce the household bills which have been held hostage by oil companies for years now.”

“The public are rightly concerned about climate breakdown and want political leaders who can deliver action in a way that fights inequality and creates good green jobs – whether that’s in manufacturing offshore wind, insulating leaky buildings or running our public transport.”
