What is Future Happenings?

Future Happenings is a creative space for people in Aberdeen to gather, share and witness inspiring ideas for the city that broaden our imagination of energy transitions.

Starting from Saturday 15th July and running for 3 weeks, there will be an innovative programme of events, workshops and street interventions at 1-5 George Street, Aberdeen.

This currently disused space is a blank canvas on which we will stimulate, entertain and encourage conversations about the difficult topics facing our city.

Drop by for 2 mins or 2 hours and help us explore these questions such as who makes decisions for Aberdeen, how do we respond to the climate crisis given our unique history with oil and how can we reimagine public space to suit our communities’ needs.

What’s in the Future Happenings programme?

Window Display Takeover – ongoing

We’re continuing the programme this week with the installation of textile artwork by visual artist Phoebe McBride in the windows and internal shop space.

Young Friends of the Earth Making Workshop – Wed 26th July 7 – 8.30pm

Join Young Friends of the Earth Scotland for a creative workshop exploring our visions for the future of Aberdeen. We’ll be chatting together, creating mini zines and writing postcards from the future that we envision.

You can draw, paint, collage, write, or get creative however you like. No artistic experience necessary!

Open to young people aged 16-30.

Friday 28th – Sunday 30th July , 11am – 3pm Film Screenings.

We invite you join us to watch two short films about oil and gas in the North East – ‘Offshore‘ by Hazel Falck and ‘The Future is Not F*cked‘ by Aberdeen filmmaker Sara Stroud.

The films highlight the perspectives of offshore workers on the transition away from oil and gas and explore the deep relationships to oil that people living in the city have developed over the past 40 years.

The films will play on loop at various times during the day.

Street Interventions – ongoing

Inspired by the art project ‘Conversations for Change’ that focussed on the stigma of talking about mental health, we’ll be making interventions to initiate conversations around difficult topics for Aberdeen.

We’ll also have film screenings, contributions from other campaign groups in the city and more workshops planned.

We’ll be updating this page with more information as we finalise the programme.
