Climate campaigners said it was “depressing” to see politicians debate opening the Rosebank and Jackdaw fields instead of talking about climate solutions to help cut bills.

Burning oil and gas is a key driver the climate induced extreme weather people have suffered in the UK this year.

The developers of the Jackdaw gas field admit it would create just 27 full time jobs if approved. The head of the International Energy Agency said that new fields “would not change much for the UK’s energy security, nor would they change the price of oil and gas.”

“Any MSP voting in favour of new North Sea drilling is demanding more wildfires, more floods and unbearable heatwaves in the UK. Burning oil and gas is the key driver of the extreme weather people are enduring around the world.

“The Scottish public would be better served by politicians debating how fast to implement climate solutions that can bring down bills and improve lives such as insulating homes, improving bus services and public ownership of renewable energy.

“The North Sea basin is running out so jobs in the industry are in inevitable, long-term decline. Talking about Rosebank and Jackdaw is a distraction from planning an orderly transition that recognises this reality and creates a plan with workers that gives them training and opportunities to move into green jobs.

“Oil and gas companies have made billions in profits from our basic needs by jacking up prices in recent years. It is depressing to seeing politicians demand we remain trapped on this fossil fuel rollercoaster when it has left 1 in 3 households in Scotland unable to afford their energy bills.”
