The latest warning about further energy bill rises must “shock politicians into action” and speed the transition away from fossil fuels, say climate campaigners

Cornwall Insights are predicting household energy prices will rise by a further 16% in January 2027, the BBC reports.

Friends of the Earth Scotland’s head of campaigns Caroline Rance said:

“This latest price rise is going to make life even harder for people and must shock politicians into action. Until both Governments take the action needed to get fossil fuel energy out of our homes, we will remain vulnerable to energy price spikes triggered by conflict and disasters far beyond our control.

“Yet the Prime Minister is rumoured to approve new oil fields in the North Sea, which we know will do nothing to bring down our bills.”

“Imagine where we’d be if when Russia invaded Ukraine, there had been a massive programme of insulating homes and powering our heating and transport with renewables. We could have protected the public from the inevitable rollercoaster of fossil fuel prices that makes oil companies richer and leaves the rest of us in the cold.”

“Burning oil and gas is the key driver of the extreme weather people are enduring around the world. This latest outrage reinforces the clear need to build an energy system that brings down bills, is based on renewables and run in the public interest.”
