Climate campaigners have welcomed news that Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is set to impose a “total ban on fracking” in England.

Friends of the Earth Scotland was a leading voice alongside the community campaigners that won a ban on fracking in planning law in Scotland in 2017.

60,000 people responded to a public consultation at this time to urge Scottish Ministers to ban the technology due to evidence around its climate impact as well the local environmental and health problems it would cause.

Friends of the Earth Scotland oil and gas campaigns manager Rosie Hampton commented,

“Fracking is a dirty, dangerous industry that has threatened communities across the UK for too long. Fracking should never even have been considered given the urgent need to transition away from burning fossil fuels.

“People power won an effective ban on fracking in Scotland in 2017 so it is heartening to see that years of struggle by communities in England are now to be recognised with this total ban in law.

“The UK needs to move on from the fossil fuels that are costing us the earth and instead build a renewable energy system that is run in the public interest, will create good local green jobs and bring down bills.”
