Peterhead residents are being invited to join a new free film club featuring monthly screenings of films telling global stories of the big issues facing the world.

The films promise to explore climate change, mental health and big ideas to change our economy to work better for people. The next film ‘Just Eat It’ on Tuesday 23 September explores how a society so obsessed with food can be wasting so much of it every day.

The organisers Friends of the Earth Scotland and Take One Action say these films are a chance for people to come together and discuss issues around climate and social justice, as well as creating a space to think of new ideas on how to tackle these issues.

The monthly screenings will take place at the Peterhead Community Theatre and are open to everyone. Screenings in the ‘Reel Change’ series started in July and will run until November.  Participants have previously enjoyed documentaries about wild fish and the rivers that sustain them, the roots of climate change in Scotland’s industrial history and one man’s quest to find the solutions that can improve the world for his daughter.

Michelle Marshall, North East community engagement officer for Friends of the Earth Scotland said:

“We’re inviting everyone along to come watch great films and have a chat about them. This is a chance to be entertained, engaged and discuss some of the biggest issues facing the world today.

“Fine folks in Peterhead have been keen to have their say on the films so far, chatting through their thoughts, how the films relate to their own lives and how they think we should collectively tackle these thorny topics.  It’s a great space for Bloo Tooners to come together and put the world to rights!”

“The next film looks at how, in a society so obsessed with cookery shows, eating healthy and with more food options than ever before, almost half of all food produced ends up being wasted.  This is whilst millions of people are using food banks and farmers are struggling to earn a living. It will be really interesting to hear what people think about this enormous issue.”
