Commenting on today’s fuel protest in Scotland by hauliers, Duncan McLaren, Chief Executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: “While we sympathise with any small business affected by rising costs – such as these hauliers – in a world of climate change and limited oil reserves, high and rising fuel prices are here to stay. This industry, like any other, must adjust if we are to successfully develop a low carbon economy. A fuel price regulator which leads to a gradual, predictable increase in costs could help with such an adjustment. “Rather than giving into the protestors and subsidising fuel costs, the Government should be investing in sustainable transport alternatives such as improved rail facilities for freight transport, and encouraging local economies through its own procurement spending.”
