Commenting on the recent rail upgrade debate, Friends of the Earth Scotland’s Head of Campaigns Juliet Swann said:

“If the coalition government really wants to be the ‘greenest government ever’, a thorough examination of the optimum ways to faciltate fast rail travel across the whole of the UK, from Inverness to Exeter, should be a priority.

“Dumping plans for a third runway at Heathrow were exactly the right thing to do. In this climate-challenged time the last thing we need to do is to maintain the impression that flying is the fastest and easiest way to get around.

“Instead we must look at overhauling our transport systems and moving to truly clean, green journeys.”
