Messages in a bottle tell governments to seal climate deal
Climate justice activists will run local days of action on Saturday 14 November, to collect messages from people all over Scotland to bring to Copenhagen.
The day of action is organised by Friends of the Earth Scotland, leading up to the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December.
Juliet Swann, Head of Projects and Campaigns at Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: “Governments take decisive action when persuaded that the electorate is behind them. Here in Scotland, our MSPs were persuaded of the need to commit to a strong 2020 target to reduce emissions by 42% because the noise from their constituents became too loud to ignore.
“We are keen to galvanise Scots to shout louder and longer than ever before in the lead up to Copenhagen to show the rest of the world what Scotland is prepared to do and encourage other developed nations to share our ambition, and commit to cuts of at least 40% in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.”
Day of action events will take place in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Inverness, Falkirk, Stirling, Glasgow, Perth and East Kilbride, calling for people not just to send messages to heads of governments, but also to join The Wave in Glasgow on 5 December.
In Inverness, Danny Alexander MP will join the local community in putting their written advice in bottles, between 10am and 2pm.
In East Kilbride, activists will collect messages in bottles and postcards from Scotland telling world leaders to seal a deal on climate change in Copenhagen.
In Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street there will also be an opportunity for people to have their pictures taken while displaying their messages.
The last step before Copenhagen is The Wave gathering in Glasgow on 5 December, where thousands of people from across Scotland will come together in a peaceful demonstration.
The Wave is organised by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, a coalition that Friends of the Earth Scotland is part of.
