Mark Ruskell MSP has proposed a Private Members Bill to change the default speed limit in built-up areas from 30 to 20mph. Currently, local authorities have to designate 20mph limits in a cumbersome, expensive and time consuming way with patchwork results. This Bill would flip the default limit, ensuring a smarter implementation of Scottish Government policy, which is already to favour 20mph.

20mph limits reduce road casualties, and lead to healthier towns and cities with thriving local communities. They are a straightforward and logical solution for addressing a range of local concerns including the need for safer and less polluted streets.
