Environment and the Economy: Helping Scotland to Flourish
This paper is a plea for a national consensus on a new goal of government. Government faces an array of challenges, in environmental, social, and economic spheres. Getting the relationship between these right is crucially important in a time of crisis and upheaval.
As part of the Scottish Environment LINK network, FoES argues that the current pre-occupation with economic growth is unduly distorting priorities; a shift of emphasis is required in the government’s ‘core purpose’. The natural environment is the envelope in which we all live, relying on its many resources; all social and economic progress depends on the healthy functioning of this global commons.
