MSP briefing – Air pollution in Scotland: Tackling a public health crisis
Air pollution kills over 2,500 people each year in Scotland – that’s more than ten times the number of road accident deaths. Our dangerous air pollution levels have been breaking Scottish and European law for years.
In this briefing for Members of the Scottish Parliament, Friends of the Earth Scotland recommends four actions the Scottish Government could take right now to tackle the crisis: a Low Emission Zone in every city in Scotland, investing 10% of the transport budget into walking and cycling, giving councils more power to improve bus services, and making 20mph the default speed limit in built-up areas.
