This report, published by Client Earth and supported by Friends of the Earth Scotland and a host of other environmental organisations, examines what impact the EU Renewable Energy Directive will have on the world’s forests.

According to the directive, 20% of overall EU final energy consumption should be fulfilled by renewable sources by 2020 and significant share of this renewable energy is expected to come from bioenergy, and especially biomass. There are worrying signs that EU consumption of biomass increases the already-too-large EU ecological footprint and should not have long-term negative environmental or social impacts.
