Scottish Government waste plans fall short
Reaction to the Scottish Government’s waste route map, which has been published today.
Kim Pratt, circular economy campaigner at Friends of the Earth Scotland, said:
“Scotland urgently needs to transform the way we consume and manage resources. We are wasting far too much, and recycling rates have been stagnant for a decade. The current system is bad for the planet, and it’s not working for any of us.
“The waste route map is crucial for changing this, but the measures described fall far short . The lack of progress improving waste management services in Scotland is evidence that the current approach is not working, yet what we’re seeing in this document is just more of the same.
“We need to see policies that will create real change. The Scottish Government should be forcing producers to take responsibility for the waste they are creating, putting a stop to new incinerators and showing real commitment to supporting workers across the waste industry.”

Scotland’s waste statistics released in October for the year 2023 showed:
- 15.5% increase in waste burned in one year
- Household waste recycled went from 43.3% to 43.5%
