This report and accompanying Scotland briefing sets out the fossil fuel investments of local government pension funds, building on similar work carried out in 2015 and 2017. It looks into the detail of how specific fossil fuel companies are driving the climate crisis and puts forward a case for action.

The analysis, carried out by Platform, is the most comprehensive yet, and shows that as of March 2020 Scottish local council pensions invested £1.2 billion in fossil fuels. For the UK the figure is nearly £10 billion.

In revealing the huge scale of council pension funds’ ownership of fossil fuels the report aims to enable action for divestment: to end the harm of fossil fuels and boost investment that brings about a greener, healthier Scotland.
