The Real Climate Pollution of Peterhead Power Station – Report & briefing
This report by Carbon Tracker estimates the real emissions of the proposed Peterhead gas power plant with carbon capture, proposed by the companies SSE & Equinor.
The main goal is to assess whether the emissions reported in the Environmental Impact Assessment report provide an accurate estimate of the future emissions of this project.
The report found serious omissions and shortcomings in the developer’s Environmental Impact Assessment report, resulting in a severe underestimation of the project’s climate impact.
The true climate pollution could be five times greater than disclosed.
The underestimate is driven by three major factors:
- failure to include of emissions related to the production and transport of natural gas to burned onsite
- emissions created during periods of unplanned outage of the carbon capture plant are not estimated
- the rate of carbon capture might be lower than claimed by the developers
Friends of the Earth Scotland are calling on the Scottish Government to order the companies to redo the Environmental Impact Assessment associated with project.
